We’ve explained what crypto is and what it can do. This lesson is the one that matters most: the risks, stated plainly, so any decision you make is an informed one.
Volatility
Crypto is extraordinarily volatile. Major coins routinely swing double digits in a day and have repeatedly fallen 70–90% from their highs. Smaller tokens regularly go to zero. Whatever the long-term story, the ride is violent, and people who buy excitement at the top often sell despair at the bottom.
Scams and fraud
This is, bluntly, the most scam-infested corner of finance:
- Rug pulls — developers hype a token, then vanish with the money.
- Pump and dumps — coordinated hype to offload coins on latecomers.
- Fake exchanges, phishing, and “giveaways” — designed to steal your keys or deposits.
- Collapses — even big names have imploded (FTX, Terra, Celsius), taking customer funds.
If something promises guaranteed or outsized returns, assume it’s a scam until proven otherwise. Almost no exceptions.
No safety net
Unlike a bank, crypto usually has no deposit insurance, no chargebacks, and no one to call. Lose your keys, get phished, or back a failed project, and the money is gone for good. Regulation is patchy and evolving, so protections you’d take for granted often simply don’t exist.
A sane way to think about it
None of this means crypto is worthless — it’s a real technology with genuine uses and committed builders. But as an investment it’s highly speculative. The only sensible approach, if you choose any exposure at all, is the one that applies to all gambling-adjacent risk: only money you can afford to lose entirely, kept small, never your savings, emergency fund, or borrowed money — and never because of FOMO or a promise.
The takeaway
Crypto is extremely volatile, scam-ridden, and has no safety net — many people lose money, and tokens regularly go to zero. Understand it, stay sceptical of any “guaranteed” returns, and risk only money you could lose entirely. Education first; caution always. (This is education, not investment advice — crypto carries a high risk of total loss.)
