Commodities Lesson 2 of 7

Gold & precious metals

Why gold is treated as a store of value and an inflation hedge — and where that reputation breaks down.

Gold is the commodity people reach for when they’re nervous. It has been money for thousands of years, it doesn’t rust, and no central bank can print more of it. That history gives it a reputation as a store of value — something that holds purchasing power when paper money or markets wobble.

Why gold is special

Gold sits in an odd place. It has little industrial use compared with its price; people want it mostly because other people want it. Its value rests on:

The other precious metals — silver, platinum, palladiumshare some of this but are far more industrial (electronics, catalytic converters), so they swing more with the economy.

The inflation-hedge idea

The classic argument: when inflation erodes the value of cash, real assets like gold should hold up. Over very long periods gold has roughly kept pace with inflation. But the relationship is loose and unreliable over years — gold can fall in real terms for a decade, then spike.

Worked example

Suppose gold is $2,000/oz and over a year inflation runs 4% while gold rises to $2,040 (+2%).

Real return = nominal return − inflation = 2% − 4% = −2%

Even though the price went up, your purchasing power fell. Gold “protected” you less than cash in a 4% savings account would have. That’s the catch: gold hedges inflation only sometimes, and it pays no income while you wait.

The honest limits

The takeaway

Gold is a perceived store of value and a sometimes-hedge against inflation and crises — prized for scarcity and trust, not for any cash flow. Treat its “safety” as a long-run reputation, not a promise: it earns nothing and its price can fall for years.
