Crypto Lesson 1 of 7

What is cryptocurrency?

Digital money with no central authority — the core idea, in plain terms.

Cryptocurrency generates enormous hype and confusion. Stripped of the noise, the core idea is fairly simple — and so are the reasons to be cautious.

Digital money without a middleman

A cryptocurrency is digital money recorded on a decentralised network rather than controlled by any single bank or government. Normally, a bank keeps the ledger of who owns what and you trust them to keep it honest. Crypto’s innovation is keeping that ledger on a shared network of computers instead — so no single party is in charge.

That ledger technology is the blockchain (next lesson). The promise is money that no government can freeze or inflate at will, and that you can send to anyone, anywhere, without a bank’s permission.

Why it’s so volatile

Because most cryptocurrencies aren’t backed by anything — no government, no profits, no physical asset — their price is driven almost entirely by what the next person will pay. That makes them extremely volatile: swings of 10%+ in a day are routine, and 50–80% drawdowns have happened repeatedly. This is not an exaggeration to scare you; it’s the historical norm.

A young, risky frontier

Crypto is barely 15 years old, lightly and unevenly regulated, and riddled with scams, hacks, and collapses (exchanges and projects have vanished with people’s money). It’s a genuine technological experiment with real promise — and also the part of finance where ordinary people most often get hurt.

So we’ll explain it clearly and honestly, including why caution matters. Understanding crypto is worthwhile; treating it as a get-rich scheme is how people lose everything they put in.

The takeaway

A cryptocurrency is digital money on a decentralised network, with no central bank or government in charge — the core innovation, and the source of its risk. Most aren’t backed by anything, making them extremely volatile and scam-prone. Worth understanding; not to be gambled with. (This is education, not investment advice — crypto is highly volatile and risky.)
